Abstract

The exhibition *Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show* at the Vitra Design Museum offers a comprehensive chronological exploration of the cultural history and staging of fashion shows from their origins around 1900 to the present day. It highlights fashion shows as interdisciplinary events that intersect with politics, society, media, and various art forms, emphasizing their evolution from intimate showroom presentations to global multimedia spectacles increasingly shaped by digital platforms. The exhibition also addresses contemporary issues such as sustainability, digitality, and diversity, while acknowledging its focus on luxury fashion and the Global North, suggesting areas for further research on broader geographic and social contexts. Through diverse media and objects, the show presents fashion shows as complex “total works of art” whose impact extends beyond their brief live duration into lasting media reception.
