Abstract

This article examines how artistic production in Tijuana, Mexico—a key migratory border city—provides unique insights into migration experiences that traditional social sciences often overlook. It highlights three pivotal artistic moments in Tijuana's transformation into a vibrant cultural hub, with particular focus on participatory projects involving migrants, such as "Jugamos a Leer" (Let's Play to Read). This project uses reading and creative writing as pedagogical tools to foster peace, identity, belonging, and memory among vulnerable migrant communities, creating safe spaces where participants can express their full humanity beyond migratory labels. The authors argue that such creative initiatives reveal emotional and social dimensions of migration, suggesting that social science research could benefit from integrating artistic and participatory methods to better understand migrants' complex lived experiences.
