Abstract
The article focuses on women's empowerment through gender equality responsive policies, programmes, and institutions within South Africa's entrepreneurial space. It examines the legislative framework, including the Constitution and various Acts of Parliament, that underpin gender equality and women's economic participation, alongside government agencies such as the National Empowerment Fund and Small Enterprise Development Agency that provide financial and non-financial support to women entrepreneurs. Despite these efforts, women's labour force participation remains lower than men's, with many women concentrated in informal and lower-value sectors, facing barriers such as limited access to finance, education, and cultural norms. The article advocates for multi-sectoral partnerships and enhanced entrepreneurship training to create an enabling environment for women, particularly those historically marginalized by apartheid, while noting the need for further research on social and political empowerment dimensions.
