Abstract

This study examines the relationship between sexual harassment (SH) and binge eating (BE) among Chinese female undergraduates, focusing on the mediating roles of self-objectification and self-control. Using a sample of 801 participants, the research found that experiences of SH were positively associated with BE and self-objectification, and negatively associated with self-control. Mediation analyses revealed that self-objectification and self-control independently and sequentially mediated the link between SH and BE, suggesting that SH leads to increased self-objectification, which depletes self-control and contributes to binge eating behaviors. These findings highlight potential psychological mechanisms underlying the impact of SH on eating behaviors and suggest intervention targets to mitigate its adverse effects.
