Abstract
The article explores the concept of "oppositional imagination" in poetry, particularly through the works of Adrienne Rich and contemporary Irish poet Dave Lordan. Rich's commitment to an oppositional poetics is highlighted, emphasizing her critique of power dynamics and her refusal of state honors that she felt were disconnected from the realities of societal inequities. In contrast, Lordan's poetry is characterized by its political radicalism and engagement with the harsh realities of modern Ireland, critiquing neoliberalism and societal numbness in the face of suffering. The article suggests that both poets challenge conventional literary norms and advocate for a poetry that confronts and reflects the complexities of their respective socio-political landscapes.
