Abstract
The article discusses a study from Columbia University Irving Medical Center that links state abortion restrictions to increased maternal mortality rates, revealing an additional 16 deaths per year in states with stringent laws. Since 2005, the number of states with significant abortion limitations has risen from eight to 27, particularly after the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The research highlights that these restrictions can adversely affect women facing medical complications during pregnancy, as well as those with conditions that make carrying a pregnancy unsafe. The findings will be presented at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting and emphasize the serious health risks associated with restrictive abortion policies.
