Abstract
Although most early scholarship on the writings of Alice (1847–1922) and Wilfrid (1852–1948) Meynell focused on the conservative aspects of their work, more recent appreciations have explored Alice's significance as a suffragist poet voicing her lived experience as mother and wife. For many years the Meynells sustained a literary salon attracting an eclectic and cosmopolitan group of writers. This article uses previously unpublished material relating to two Francophone members of this circle, Valery Larbaud and Daniel O'Connor, to highlight how the Meynells' radical roots and reach helped promote a new generation of avant-garde writers and translators.
