Abstract
This article focuses on the integration of feminist consciousness and diasporic Armenian identity through an ethnographic and autoethnographic study of Armenian Feminists, a Boston-based American Armenian collective founded in 1993. It explores how the group creates a counterpublic space that reconciles feminist beliefs with Armenian cultural traditions, using ritual practices, conversation, and shared experiences to challenge patriarchal and nationalist norms within both Armenian diaspora communities and US feminism. The study highlights the group's role in fostering a feminist diasporic positionality that reclaims Armenian heritage while addressing gendered hierarchies, trauma from the Armenian genocide, and intersectional identities. Despite limitations related to homogeneity and generational attrition, the Armenian Feminists have contributed to transnational feminist theory by exemplifying how localized communal practices can produce hybrid feminist identities within diasporic contexts.
