Abstract

The article focuses on the experiences of a woman named Elsa, who reflects on her past as a dial painter at the United States Radium Corporation during World War I and the subsequent health issues faced by her and her colleagues due to radium exposure. As she navigates her daily life with her husband Henry, Elsa grapples with the secret of her past employment and the impact it had on her health and family. She learns about the dangers of radium, which was initially thought to be beneficial, and faces the emotional burden of potentially having a "body burden" of radiation. Ultimately, she seeks to reconcile her past with her present, contemplating the memories of her friends who suffered from the consequences of their work while finding solace in her own relatively good health.
