Abstract

Israel has established its first-ever combat unit for religious women in response to a shortage of battlefield soldiers and a growing desire among modern Orthodox women to join the fight. The unit was created following the October 2023 attack by Hamas and subsequent conflicts in the region. With about 170,000 active personnel, Israel's military is seen as too small to address the existential threats facing the country, prompting the recruitment of female religious combat troops. The new recruits will undergo eight months of training and serve as combat intelligence troops in a female battalion led by an all-female staff, accompanied by a woman providing guidance on spiritual and religious matters.
