Abstract
The article presents an interview with playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith, whose works explore race, class, and urban conflict through a blend of social commentary, theatrical drama, and personal musings. She discusses the role of fine arts, especially theater, in helping diverse populations understand each other, the response of companies to her as an African American female actress and her casting, and the value of storytelling as a form of communication.
