Abstract

This article analyzes Barbara Kingsolver’s non-fiction and Appalachian fiction through the lens of bioregionalism, emphasizing her use of "place as the filter" to explore human-place interactions and place-attachment amid global environmental crises. It situates her works within ecocriticism’s four waves, highlighting how Kingsolver’s narratives connect local bioregional issues—such as those in Appalachia and various American habitats—with broader global ecological imaginations. Through detailed examinations of her books like *Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands*, *High Tide in Tucson*, *Small Wonder*, and novels *Prodigal Summer* and *Flight Behavior*, the article demonstrates Kingsolver’s integration of scientific knowledge and poetic sensibility to advocate for sustainable living rooted in intimate, place-based ecological awareness. Ultimately, Kingsolver’s writings propose a bioregional sensibility that bridges local ecological identity with global environmental responsibility.
