Abstract

The article features the life and works of the late recording artist Billie Holiday, who transformed as a symbol of resistance and of pain made beautiful. Also cited are the effects of racism and addiction to Holiday's popularity and influence as a jazz singer, her growing up years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her discovery by producer John Hammond in 1933.
