Abstract
This book claims to offer 'the first full-length study of Smith's I Elegiac Sonnets i , her most important publication' (2). There then follows a detailed discussion of Smith's famous sonnet XLIV: "Written in the Church-yard at Middleton in Sussex", which Roberts links to Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard", although not itself a sonnet. Here, within the "miniature genre" of river sonnets, Roberts situates "Smith in an emergent tradition" and convincingly argues how "the lineal form of the river" is "adapted to suit the sonnet form" (45).
