Abstract
This article examines implicit gender bias in media portrayals of male baseball players and female softball players, focusing on the depiction of bats as symbols of aggression and dominance. Analyzing 400 images from major sports websites, the study found that male baseball players were significantly more likely than female softball players to be shown holding or swinging bats, despite bats being equally central to both sports. Conversely, female softball players were more frequently depicted in active, agentic roles such as pitching, suggesting that the bias is specific to associations with aggression linked to bats rather than a general reluctance to portray women as active athletes. The findings highlight how implicit stereotypes may influence media representation, potentially affecting public perceptions and enthusiasm for women’s sports.
