Abstract
This article reviews the effects of birth trauma on maternal mental and sexual wellness, with a focus on minority women. It highlights that physical birth trauma, such as third- or fourth-degree perineal tears, is linked to sexual health issues including dyspareunia and decreased libido, while psychological effects include post-traumatic stress and depression. The review also addresses disparities faced by minority women, who experience higher rates of maternal morbidity and mortality and face barriers to accessing mental and sexual health care due to stigma and systemic inequities. The authors emphasize the need to acknowledge racism and stigma in obstetrics to provide culturally competent care that reduces birth trauma and improves postpartum outcomes.
