Abstract

President Joe Biden issued a formal apology for the federal government's role in operating Indian boarding schools that separated Native American children from their families, causing harm to tribal communities. The apology, delivered at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, acknowledged the historical trauma inflicted on indigenous families by policies aimed at assimilating American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American Cabinet secretary, joined Biden in recognizing the trauma caused by the boarding school system and pledged federal resources to preserve native languages. Biden also highlighted his administration's investments in Indian Country, including funding from the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. [Extracted from the article]
