Abstract
Barbara Kingsolver, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Demon Copperhead, used her experiences in Lee County, Virginia, to create a sober home for women struggling with addiction. The Higher Ground Women's Recovery Residence offers counseling and job training to help residents rebuild their lives. Kingsolver invested $200,000 and royalties from her book to establish this facility in 2025, aiming to make a positive impact on the community affected by the opioid epidemic.
