Abstract

The article focuses on the life and career of Faith Ringgold, an award-winning African American visual artist, children's book author-illustrator, and teacher known for her "story quilt" art form. Born in Harlem in 1930, Ringgold combined painting, quilting, and storytelling to depict African American experiences and social justice themes, gaining recognition for works like her "Tar Beach" story quilt, which was adapted into a celebrated children's book. Throughout her career, she was active in civil rights and feminist movements, taught art in New York City public schools and at the University of California, San Diego, and received numerous awards and honors. Her art is held in major museum collections, including the Guggenheim and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ringgold passed away at age 93 in 2023.
