Abstract
This article investigates the relationship between the quantity of top-talent players and team performance in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) using regression analyses based on player impact estimate (PIE) and plus-minus ratings (PM) as measures of talent. Analyzing data from 2013 to 2022, the study finds that teams with more top-talent players, identified as those in the top one-third by PIE or PM scores, tend to achieve more regular season wins, with PM showing a stronger predictive relationship. The research highlights differences between the WNBA and NBA in available player metrics and emphasizes the importance of including women's professional sports data to better understand team dynamics and support coaching decisions. Limitations include the focus on recent data and the absence of certain statistics like estimated wins added (EWA) for the WNBA, as well as unaccounted factors such as career breaks.
