Abstract
The article discusses the emergence of a distinct group of female artists in jazz who exhibit control over their careers, think conceptually, and excel in various disciplines beyond music. It highlights Somi, the singer-composer, and playwright, and her tribute album to Miriam Makeba, emphasizing the African roots of jazz and the importance of storytelling in her music. Somi's journey to pay homage to Makeba's legacy is also detailed.
