Abstract

The article focuses on a case of cutaneous larva migrans, a hookworm infection, in a 23-year-old male returning from Sri Lanka, highlighting diagnostic and treatment challenges in a rural UK setting. The patient initially received antibiotics for an infected insect bite, but persistent symptoms and a migrating linear skin track led to a diagnosis confirmed through consultation with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Treatment with Ivermectin was complicated by local prescribing restrictions requiring a tropical medicine consultant’s signature, necessitating either patient travel to a specialist center or a delayed referral. The case underscores difficulties in accessing timely treatment for tropical infections in non-specialist settings and suggests that remote consultant prescriptions could improve patient care efficiency.
