Abstract
On May 10th, Earth experienced its most extreme geomagnetic storm since 2003, caused by a series of plasma expulsions from the Sun known as coronal mass ejections. The storm generated aurorae at latitudes as low as the Florida Keys and disrupted GPS signals, satellite orbits, and power grids. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that it will add questions about sexual orientation and gender identity to its annual census of Ph.D. recipients, providing data on LGBTQ representation in STEM fields. Two scientists, Alexandra Freeman and Lionel Tarassenko, have been appointed to the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, aiming to improve evidence-based decision-making. AstraZeneca has withdrawn its COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria, due to concerns about a rare clotting disorder. The American Cancer Society has launched a study to examine cancer risk in Black women, aiming to understand the factors that contribute to higher mortality rates. The National Museum of Brazil received a donation of over 1000 fossils to help rebuild its paleontology collection, which was largely destroyed in a fire in 2018. The fossils, originating from Brazil's Araripe Basin, include ancient turtles, plants, insects, dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. The British Journal of Sports Medicine retracted six publications by its former editor-in-chief, Paul McCrory, due to evidence of plagiarism and other issues.
