Abstract

This article focuses on the phylogeography and demographic history of the southern three-banded armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus) in Argentina, a key species of the South American Chaco region. Using mitochondrial DNA markers (12S ribosomal RNA and control region), the study found no strong phylogeographic breaks but identified genetic differences between northern and southern populations, with higher genetic diversity in the north. Demographic analyses indicate that T. matacus underwent population and range expansions primarily from north to south during the Quaternary period, likely influenced by climatic oscillations and landscape changes such as river dynamics. These findings provide important genetic insights for understanding the species’ evolutionary history and inform conservation strategies for this threatened mammal.
