Abstract

This article focuses on the impact of the 2019 crude oil spill on the offspring of the seahorse species Hippocampus reidi in northeastern Brazil. Researchers compared reproductive outcomes from two sites: the apparently healthy Massangana River estuary and the oil-impacted Cocaia Island. While no malformations were observed in offspring from Massangana, an average of 19.73% of newborns from Cocaia exhibited various malformations, likely linked to the teratogenic effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the spill and subsequent population bottleneck effects. The study highlights the persistence of environmental toxicity two years post-spill and suggests that seahorse offspring malformations can serve as bioindicators for monitoring long-term ecological impacts of oil contamination.
