Abstract
The article focuses on the presence and characteristics of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) in Ohio and surrounding states. Originating from South America, this armored mammal has expanded its range northward into parts of the southern and midwestern United States, including Kentucky and Indiana, where stable populations exist. Ohio has recorded only two roadkill armadillos, likely accidental visitors rather than established residents. The species’ northward expansion is limited by cold winters due to their low body fat and susceptibility to hypothermia. Armadillos are nocturnal insectivores known for their unique defense behaviors and burrowing habits, and while they can carry the leprosy bacterium, transmission risk to humans is low.
