Abstract

Chemical analyses and historical records shed light on movement - and near extinction - of southern right whales As big as they are, whales are still needles in the proverbial haystack of the ocean - hard to spot, and even harder to track. "It's really bloody hard to get these samples", says co-author Emma Carroll, a marine biologist at the University of Auckland who has been studying this whale species for decades.
