Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the combined effects of reflective plastic mulches and insecticides (thiamethoxam and oxamyl) on suppressing pepper weevil (Anthonomus eugenii Cano) populations and increasing yield in jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annuum) under field conditions in Homestead, Florida. Conducted over three growing seasons (fall 2020, spring 2021, and spring 2022), the study found that integrating reflective "silver on white" plastic mulch with insecticide treatments showed potential in reducing pepper weevil adults and increasing marketable yield, although results varied by season. While insecticide treatments consistently reduced weevil abundance compared to untreated controls, mulch type alone did not significantly enhance pest control. The study suggests further evaluation of this integrated approach alongside other management strategies to optimize pepper weevil suppression and reduce insecticide use in commercial jalapeño production.
