Abstract
The article discusses how the sequencing of hagfish genomes has helped scientists understand the timing and impact of genome duplications in vertebrate evolution. The hagfish, an unusual jawless vertebrate, has provided insights into the history of vertebrates and challenges the idea that genome doubling drives species diversification. The sequencing of hagfish genomes revealed that there were two rounds of genome doubling in early vertebrate history, and these events preceded the branching off of hagfish and lamprey.
