Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the in vitro amoebicidal efficacy of essential oils (EOs) derived from Aloysia citrodora (Verbenaceae), Cymbopogon winterianus (Poaceae), and Ocimum gratissimum (Lamiaceae), as well as their microemulsion (ME) formulations, against Acanthamoeba polyphaga trophozoites. The study found that all three EOs and their MEs exhibited antiparasitic activity, with O. gratissimum EO showing the lowest inhibitory concentration (IC50) values, and eugenol—its major component—demonstrating the highest amoebicidal activity among isolated compounds. Microemulsions significantly enhanced the amoebicidal effect of the EOs, reducing IC50 values by over 80% after 24 hours, and caused damage to the trophozoite cell membranes leading to cell death. These findings suggest that EO-based microemulsions represent promising alternatives for developing treatments against infections caused by Acanthamoeba spp., although further research is needed to clarify mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential.
