The genetic secrets of the United States's privately owned tigers.

Abstract
A new study has revealed that privately owned tigers in the United States do not suffer from inbreeding and have a surprising amount of genetic diversity. The study compared the DNA of 138 captive tigers with that of wild tigers and found that the captive tigers are a well-mixed genetic mishmash of tiger populations from across their native range in Asia. This information is important for making informed decisions about the potential role of captive populations in reintroduction and rewilding efforts. While the privately owned tigers are not a source of long-lost genes that have disappeared from wild populations, they could serve as a backup for genetic diversity in the future.
