Abstract

This article focuses on the reproductive biology of the freshwater hermaphroditic snail Planorbella trivolvis, specifically investigating the structure, location, and fate of sperm after mating. Using fluorescent DNA staining techniques, researchers distinguished between autosperm (self-produced sperm) and allosperm (sperm received from a mate), finding that shortly after copulation, allosperm is primarily stored in the sperm receptacle sac, while longer-term storage occurs near the seminal vesicles and hermaphroditic duct. The study also describes the morphology of P. trivolvis sperm and highlights the need for further research to understand how these snails differentiate between autosperm and allosperm for fertilization. These findings contribute to understanding hermaphrodite reproductive strategies, sperm storage, and fertilization processes in freshwater pulmonate snails.
