Abstract

The article focuses on the U.S. Army's mid-19th-century experiment to use camels as a solution to the logistical challenges of controlling and supplying military outposts across the newly acquired desert territories of the American West. Topics include the political and military advocacy that led to the creation of the Camel Corps, the testing and ultimate abandonment of the project amid the Civil War, and the cultural fascination that transformed camel expedition into a symbolic reimagining.
