Abstract

News Some ancient DNA may be leading paleontologists astray in attempts to date when woolly mammoths went extinct. Miller finds the nearly 7,000-year time span between the youngest known mammoth fossil in northern Siberia and the youngest mammoth eDNA reported by Wang's team suspicious. Miller and Simpson based their estimates of how long mammoth bones can shed DNA into the environment on radiocarbon dating of large animal bones found in cold climates today.
