Abstract
The article focuses on the growing popularity of pet squirrels in China and the associated challenges in conservation, public health, and animal welfare. It identifies at least six commonly bred squirrel species and two flying squirrel species involved in the pet trade, noting that trafficking often crosses natural ecosystem boundaries, leading to ecological and zoonotic disease risks. Despite strict controls on breeding and sales qualifications, the article highlights inadequate supervision of sales and transport, resulting in high mortality rates and welfare concerns. It recommends that the Chinese government enforce stricter regulations, licensing, humane breeding conditions, frequent inspections, and restrictions on cross-ecosystem trade to promote sustainability and protect both animal welfare and public health.
