Abstract

This case report focuses on the comprehensive management of dental calculus and periodontal disease in a captive meerkat (Suricata suricatta). The meerkat presented with extensive dental plaque, calculus, halitosis, and gingivitis alongside clinical signs of anemia and mild renal insufficiency. Treatment involved ultrasonic scaling under general anesthesia combined with systemic therapies including antibiotics, iron supplementation, fluid therapy, analgesics, and renal support. The procedure was successful, resulting in resolution of oral inflammation, improved appetite, and overall recovery, highlighting the importance of integrated oral and systemic care in managing periodontal disease in small exotic carnivores.
