Abstract
This article focuses on experimentally testing the role of social history in shaping dominance rank in captive monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus). Through removal and reintroduction of individuals of varying ranks across three social groups, the study found that none of the removed birds immediately regained their previous rank, with top-ranked birds experiencing greater rank loss and bodyweight decline than lower-ranked birds. The results showed no consistent correlation between bodyweight, an individual characteristic, and rank, supporting the hypothesis that rank emerges primarily from memory of past social interactions rather than fixed individual traits. These findings highlight the importance of social memory and interaction history in dominance hierarchies within this cognitively complex species.
