Abstract
This article focuses on the genetic diversity, phylogeography, and demographic patterns of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) in Colombia to inform its management and conservation. Using three mitochondrial markers (cox1, cytb, and trnP/trnF/D-Loop), the study analyzed 33 new samples alongside previously reported sequences, identifying high genetic variability and four distinct haplogroups across Colombian populations. The findings reveal significant genetic structure correlated with geography and suggest management units to preserve genetic integrity, emphasizing the need for genetically informed translocation and breeding programs. The authors recommend further research using nuclear markers to complement mitochondrial data and support conservation strategies under Colombia's legislative framework protecting this Endangered species.
