Abstract

This article focuses on the taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analysis of the freshwater isopod genus *Lirceus* Rafinesque, 1820, in Ohio and Kentucky, USA. Molecular and morphological analyses led to the redescription of *Lirceus fontinalis* and *Lirceus richardsonae*, revealing that *L. fontinalis* is restricted to Fayette County, Kentucky, while *L. richardsonae* has a much broader range across western Ohio and northeastern Indiana. Additionally, a new species, *Lirceus exohyalus* n. sp., was identified in Delaware County, Ohio, representing a distinct lineage possibly linked to Appalachian faunal assemblages. These findings suggest a contact zone in Ohio shaped by postglacial dispersal and highlight the potential for undiscovered diversity within the genus and broader freshwater ecosystems in the region.
