Abstract

The article focuses on glass sponges, scientifically known as Hexactinellida, which inhabit deep ocean environments and possess silica-based skeletons. These sponges, found at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters, filter feed on tiny particles and can form intricate structures, such as the vase-like Venus' flower basket, which provides a symbiotic habitat for crustaceans. Glass sponge reefs, discovered off the coast of British Columbia in 1987, are rare ecosystems that support diverse marine life and have been designated as marine protected areas due to their ecological significance.
