Abstract
The article focuses on Kokanee (Oncorhynchus nerka), the landlocked form of Sockeye Salmon native to the Pacific Northwest, and their introduced populations in U.S. water systems affected by dams. In Wyoming, kokanee introduced to Flaming Gorge Reservoir feed primarily on plankton for 3–4 years before migrating upstream in the fall to spawn in the Green River through Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. After spawning in gravel nests called redds, adult kokanee die and serve as prey for various wildlife, while their offspring hatch and remain in the gravel over winter before drifting downstream to the reservoir in spring to continue the cycle.
