Abstract
This article focuses on identifying potential sex pheromone components for six North American click beetle (Elateridae) species through field experiments conducted in Illinois, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. Male beetles of Agriotes insanus, Elater abruptus, Melanotus ignobilis, and three Gambrinus species were strongly attracted to specific compounds: geranyl butyrate, 5-methylhexyl (Z)-4-decenoate, 11-dodecenyl butyrate, and limoniic acid, respectively. These attractants are structurally similar to known pheromones of related European and Asian species, suggesting conservation of pheromone chemistry within genera and tribes. The study also presents an improved synthesis method for limoniic acid, facilitating future research and potential development of pheromone-based monitoring or management tools. Variations in capture rates across locations and times highlight the influence of local population densities, phenology, and trap design on beetle attraction.
