Abstract

This article examines Ken Burns’s documentary *The American Buffalo*, highlighting its focus on the near extermination and subsequent conservation of the American buffalo in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, closely tied to Indigenous peoples’ history and culture. The film features expert commentary, including Native American voices and descendants of historical figures, and employs extensive historical imagery to bring the story to life. However, the article identifies several instances where images used in the film are inaccurately dated, misattributed, or depict different tribes or locations than those described, raising concerns about historical precision. While these discrepancies are relatively few among the hundreds of images, the article suggests that maintaining strict historical accuracy is important for documentaries of this stature.
