Abstract
The article focuses on the biology and ecological impact of praying mantises, highlighting three species found in the northeastern United States: the native Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) and the non-native Chinese mantid (Tenodera sinensis) and European mantid (Mantis religiosa). It describes their physical characteristics, hunting behavior, and reproductive habits, including the female's occasional cannibalism of the male after mating. The article raises concerns about the introduction and sale of non-native mantid egg cases, emphasizing that these mantises prey indiscriminately on beneficial pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, potentially disrupting local ecosystems.
