Abstract
This article examines the prevalence and co-occurrence of childhood parental neglect, abuse, and rejection among travestis and transgender women in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using data from a cross-sectional study of 139 participants. Findings reveal high rates of emotional abuse (60.4%), physical abuse (57.6%), sexual abuse (44.6%), and parental eviction (32.4%), with many individuals experiencing multiple overlapping forms of maltreatment. The study highlights the significant mental and physical health risks associated with these adverse childhood experiences and underscores the urgent need for public policies that protect gender-diverse children's rights and promote family and community support. It also situates these findings within the broader context of social stigma, conservative political shifts, and barriers to healthcare access faced by transgender populations in Brazil.
