Shuya Nanahara, an athletic and kindhearted student. He loves rock music and has a deep distrust of the Republic, in part because his father was murdered for antigovernment activities. Because his mother also died, he was raised in an orphanage. Shuya is quick to trust other students and is loyal to his friends. Though he does not have much romantic self-confidence, a large number of the girls in his school harbor secret crushes on him, while many male students respect him because of his skill as a baseball shortstop. Over the course of the Program, he comes to realize that he cannot rely on all the other students to fight on his side and eventually becomes more comfortable engaging in violence when he can justify it as self-defense.
Noriko Nakagawa, a petite girl with kind, dark eyes. She is a skilled writer and enjoys reading the lyrics that Shuya composes. Shuya's best friend, Yoshitoki, has a crush on her, and when Yoshitoki dies and Noriko is injured, Shuya decides it is his duty to protect her. Despite how average she seems to many students, she is wise, and her observations of the Program are both insightful and strategically helpful. She speaks with such eloquence that her words sound like poetry, which contributes to her deepening bond with Shuya.
Shogo Kawada, a mysterious new student with intense scarring across his body. He has facial hair and smokes cigarettes. Although he keeps his past a secret from almost everyone, he eventually reveals that he was the winner of a previous Program and entered this competition to avenge his love interest, who died during his previous battle. His loner qualities make him seem untrustworthy to most people. However, he conceals his plans because he believes he has a better chance of succeeding and saving others by operating secretly. He hates the government with an intense passion and would rather damage the state than save himself.
Kazuo Kiriyama, a handsome and intelligent student who leads a gang of thugs. He is skilled in numerous endeavors, from playing the violin to martial arts, and is capable of singlehandedly defeating several skilled fighters in hand-to-hand combat. He is a brutal and brilliant killer.

After years of physical and sexual abuse from older men, she distrusts most people and has learned to use her attractive features as a weapon. While she is popular and has a group of girls who follow her around, she has no problem murdering her classmates and is one of the most dangerous students in the Program. She even killed her own mother.
Kinpatsu Sakamochi, a government official who runs the Program. He is cruel and sadistic and has no problem destroying the lives of others when he believes it will benefit the Republic.
Shinji Mimura, a star basketball player who is knowledgeable about the world outside of the Republic. His wears an earring. He relies on his skills with computers and engineering to try to defeat the government and escape the Program.
Yutaka Seto, a short boy who relies on jokes to get along socially. He allies himself with Shinji in an attempt to escape the island.
Hiroki Sugimura, a tall, shy boy. He studies martial arts and enjoys Chinese poetry. During the Program, he becomes obsessed with finding his best friend and the girl he loves.
Yukie Utsumi, the female class representative and an outgoing, trustworthy person. She believes in caring for others and gathers a group of girls to protect one another. She has a crush on Shuya.
Yoshio Akamatsu, a tall and awkward boy who is often bullied by other students. His distrust of others leads him to be one of the first students to kill another.
Keita Iijima, a cowardly boy with few friends. He used to have a close connection to Shinji, but they had a falling out when he refused to help during a fight.
Yumiko Kusaka, a somewhat tomboyish girl who has a crush on Shuya. She quickly joins up with her best friend, Yukiko.
Yukiko Kitano, a friendly and feminine girl with a crush on Shuya. Her gentle nature leads her to believe that she can trust all of her classmates.
