Index to Printed Music (IPM)

The Index to Printed Music (IPM) is the digital finding aid for locating musical works contained in printed collections, sets, and series. IPM indexes individual pieces printed in the complete works of composers, anthologies of music, and other scholarly editions. With over 550,000 entries, curated by a team of experts, IPM expands every year to include new volumes as they are added to existing sets and series and new editions as they appear on the market.

New and Enhanced Features

On 1 July 2018, Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) assumed ownership of the Index to Printed Music. The newly released version includes the following features:

  • Detailed records for each volume indexed in the database, including a table of contents (linked to records for individual works), links to series, and publication information
  • Search results now include records for both individual musical works and whole volumes
  • Linking between individual piece records, records for editions of music, and series makes it easy to navigate from the most granular details of individual pieces to an expansive view of an entire series
  • Records for pieces that are available as part of open-access editions include hyperlinks.
  • Expanded search filters enable users to refine their searches by place and date of publication, document type, genre and language of text
  • New series authority allows users to browse series records

An essential tool for music researchers and performers

IPM provides students, teachers, and researchers with essential access to specific musical works contained in printed collections, sets, and series. Performers, conductors, and directors of ensembles will also find IPM a valuable search tool because it provides a granular level of detail about each piece, including performing forces, language, genre, type of score, sources, and publication information. Users can easily locate different editions of the same piece within IPM.

Comprehensive Coverage

IPM indexes over 1,500 series, sets, and monuments, and hundreds of composers' collected works. As new volumes are added to existing sets and series, IPM expands continuously to be as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible.
